Today the Xplorers took turns presenting their reflections on their projects-
What were you trying to do? What would you need to do to finish?
Group 1: Could not securely attach the propeller to the motor. Most challenging was getting the gears to properly mesh. If revised would not use two gears- it got too complicated.
Group 2: Many changes- originally was supposed to be larger. A more stable base would have improved the performance. They taped the blades to the foam to keep the blade angle constant. Added a box on top. Challenging when it tipped.
Group 3: Made a design with a row of eight 40-tooth Lego gears, as a way of keeping larger rotors from interfering.
The original 4-gear version did not spin because the blades were too small.
Was supposed to incorporate a flying bed. There were many competing ideas.
Greengineering is about trying things you are unsure of.
Wobbles too much. Needed to be better planned out.
Group 4: Blades needed to be changed. Very original design.
Group 5: Savonius vertical shaft- not supported well on small shaft.
Group 6: Too big. Did not have a real reason for 3 blades. Increasing number of blades decreases efficiency.
Group 7: PVC design very innovative- drilled holes in PVC to secure blades- worked well.
Mr. Peloquin-
If I did it over, I would maintain:
(1) A strict timeline
(2) Incorporate regular design reviews.
NEXT PROJECT: DESIGN A BICYCLE SHELTER ( with project being done by the 201's)
Bike rack near tennis courts- 8' x 24' area.
People would ride more if bikes were protected.
- will design prototype bike shelter
-What would you want to include?
- Lights
- Tools
- Air Pump
- Solar panels
Working with the city staff- sustainable materials.
Will divide into 8 groups- will mainly be judged
on:
- Use of shop time
- Work ethic
4 work days
Friday- will begin prototyping
Josh- suggested tent idea:
