Dec 9th- GRNG 101- Project updates

Project updates-

Algae Group:

We  have ordered some Chlorella algae and have begun looking at Bioreactors to see what we would need to obtain.

Dr. T- Keep working on the Bioreactor; there is flexible plastic tubing now available from a project in another course.

Roadblocks- While waiting for stock to come in, what can you be researching? What are the parts of the bioreactor? How will it work?

Research the process for extracting fuels from algae, and what supplies and equipment are needed for this.

Is there something in GreenEngineering you can modify or repurpose rather than simply buying new? One of the main points of this class is develop skills in building/modifying/upcycling.

See for example: http://www.instructables.com/id/An-Algae-Bioreactor-from-Recycled-Water-Bottles/

Bikes Group-

We are working on our final design for the bike stand, and gathering the materials that we need.

We need to determine the gauge/type of wire that we need ( see http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/wire-gauges-d_419.html ).

Dr. T- What do you need for the next step to set up the system?

Aquaponics Group-

We have bought a package of plastic net cups for planting things.  We need ammonia and bacteria.

Dr. T--Research what you need to establish the nitrogen cycle in the system first without fish- fish can be added once the pH and nitrogen levels are stabilized.

See http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-cycle-an-aquaponics-system-using-the-fishle/

How can the Mason Jars be sterilized? See https://www.leaf.tv/articles/how-to-sterilize-canning-jars-without-boiling/

Materials Group-

The Chia Grass plants are growing well in the graphic arts room. We will be giving a presentation for the administration to advocate for our project.

Dr. T- Practice your presentation with the group.

Roadblocks-- Do the custodians need access to the windows to wash them?

Dr. T will email them and find out.
