Sept 13th- Exploratory-Paper Tables

Challenge:

Paper Table( 20 minutes)

Working individually, design and build a table out of newspaper tubes. Make it at least eight inches tall and strong enough to hold a heavy textbook.

Do a sketch first ( 5 minutes)-- then summarize your plan in three words, then build for 20 minutes.

MATERIALS(per person)
  • 1 piece of cardboard approximately 8 1/2" x 11"
  • Heavy Textbook
  • Masking Tape( no fixed amount, but don't over-do it)
  • 8 sheets of newspaper ( 1 double sheet of Boston Globe = 2 sheets)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Say 3 words that describe your design--then 1 minute to revises--

Supports--4-legs
strong --support--simple
stout--support--triangle
----------------------------------

Top right--I liked the use of diagonal struts to stiffen the square..

This one above reminded me of a Kenneth Snelson tensegrity sculpture:

Are there designs you would change? What would you change?

Truss arrangement is most stable-

Compare to Wright Flyer( 1903)-- only compressive structures are vertical posts, all diagonals are cables in tension.

Where we are going:
  • Electricity( penny batteries, etc.)
  • Larger projects:
    • Passive Solar
    • Active Solar
    • Wind Power/turbines
If you are the kind of person who cares about how things look---go for it!

If you are the kind of person  who just wants things to work---go for it!
We need both types!

Culture of NNHS Greenengineering:
  • About trying things out
  • About figuring how things look
  • You'll remember things better if you're the person who figured things out( rather than just asking the teacher)
  • Think about potential solutions and ways to get around issues you encounter.
  • Later we will often have music on,
  • We will be having a short safety review and quiz next week
  • Cleanliness-always an issue- we share the space with three other classes, so important to clean up.
  • Shop organization is an issue being worked on.
  • Prototyping bins- you can use anything.
  • Grading- we have a rubric. Main issue is that you are working instead of vegging, texting, etc..... if you don't know what to do---ask!
